Frostbite Chapter 14 Free Essays
string(70) " taken back to when I too had experienced that same kind of euphoria\." FOURTEEN TWO GUYS Iââ¬â¢D NEVER MET before were squaring off against each other. They looked to be in their twenties, and neither noticed me. The one whoââ¬â¢d bumped into me shoved the other one hard, forcing him to stagger back considerably. We will write a custom essay sample on Frostbite Chapter 14 or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re afraid!â⬠yelled the guy by me. He had on green swimming trunks, and his black hair was slicked back with water. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re all afraid. You just want to hole up in your mansions and let the guardians do your dirty work. What are you going to do when theyââ¬â¢re all dead? Whoââ¬â¢ll protect you then?â⬠The other guy wiped the blood off his face with the back of his hand. I suddenly recognized him- thanks to his blond highlights. He was the royal whoââ¬â¢d yelled at Tasha about wanting to lead Moroi to battle. Sheââ¬â¢d called him Andrew. He tried to land a hit and failed; his technique was all wrong. ââ¬Å"This is the safest way. Listen to that Strigoi-lover, and weââ¬â¢ll all be dead. Sheââ¬â¢s trying to kill our whole race off!â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s trying to save us!â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s trying to get us to use black magic!â⬠The ââ¬Å"Strigoi-loverâ⬠had to be Tasha. The non-royal guy was the first person outside of my little circle whom Iââ¬â¢d ever heard speak in her favor. I wondered how many others out there shared his view. He punched Andrew again, and my base instincts- or maybe the punch- made me leap into action. I sprang forward and wedged myself between them. I was still dizzy and a bit unsteady. If they hadnââ¬â¢t been standing so close, I probably would have fallen over. They both hesitated, clearly caught off guard. ââ¬Å"Get out of here,â⬠snapped Andrew. Being male and Moroi, they had greater height and weight than I, but I was probably stronger than either one alone. Hoping I could make the most of that, I grabbed each of them by the arm, pulled them toward me, and then shoved them away as hard as I could. They staggered, not having expected my strength. I staggered a little too. The non-royal glared and took a step toward me. I was counting on the fact that heââ¬â¢d be old-fashioned and not hit a girl. ââ¬Å"What are you doing?â⬠he exclaimed. Several people had gathered and were watching excitedly. I returned his glare. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m trying to stop you guys from being any more idiotic than you already are! You want to help? Stop fighting each other! Ripping each otherââ¬â¢s heads off isnââ¬â¢t going to save the Moroi unless youââ¬â¢re trying to thin stupidity out of the gene pool.â⬠I pointed at Andrew. ââ¬Å"Tasha Ozera is not trying to kill everyone off. Sheââ¬â¢s trying to get you to stop being a victim.â⬠I turned to the other guy. ââ¬Å"And as for you, youââ¬â¢ve got a long ways to go if you think this is the way to get your point across. Magic- especially offensive magic- takes a lot of self-control, and so far, you arenââ¬â¢t impressing me with yours. I have more than you do, and if you knew me at all, youââ¬â¢d know how crazy that is.â⬠The two guys stared at me, stunned. I was apparently more effective than a taser. Well, at least for several seconds I was. Because once the shock of my words wore off, they went at each other again. I got caught in the crossfire and shoved away, nearly falling in the process. Suddenly, from behind me, Mason came to my defense. He punched the first guy he could- the non-royal. The guy flew backward, falling into one of the pools with a splash. I yelped, remembering my earlier fear about skull-cracking, but a moment later, he found his feet and rubbed water out of his eyes. I grabbed Masonââ¬â¢s arm, trying to hold him back, but he shrugged me off and went after Andrew. He shoved Andrew hard, pushing him into several Moroi- andrewââ¬â¢s friends, I suspected- who seemed to be trying to break up the fight. The guy in the pool climbed out, fury written all over his face, and made moves toward Andrew. This time, both Mason and I blocked his way. He glared at all of us. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t,â⬠I warned him. The guy clenched his fists and looked as though he might try to take us on. But we were intimidating, and he didnââ¬â¢t appear to have an entourage of friends here like Andrew- who was shouting obscenities and being led away- did. With a few muttered threats, the non-royal backed off. As soon as he was gone, I turned on Mason. ââ¬Å"Are you out of your mind?â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"Jumping into the middle of that!â⬠ââ¬Å"You jumped in too,â⬠he said. I started to argue, then realized he was right. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s different,â⬠I grumbled. He leaned forward. ââ¬Å"Are you drunk?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Of course not. Iââ¬â¢m just trying to keep you from doing something stupid. Just because you have delusions of being able to kill a Strigoi doesnââ¬â¢t mean you have to take it out on everyone else.â⬠ââ¬Å"Delusions?â⬠he asked stiffly. I started to feel kind of nauseous just then. My head spinning, I continued toward the side room, hoping I didnââ¬â¢t stumble. But when I reached it, I saw that it wasnââ¬â¢t some kind of dessert or drink room after all. Well, at least not in the way Iââ¬â¢d been thinking. It was a feeder room. Several humans reclined on satin-covered chaise lounges with Moroi by their sides. Jasmine incense burned in the air. Stunned, I watched with an eerie fascination as a blond Moroi guy leaned forward and bit into the neck of a very pretty redhead. All of these feeders were exceptionally good-looking, I realized just then. Like actresses or models. Only the best for royalty. The guy drank long and deep, and the girl closed her eyes and parted her lips, an expression of pure bliss on her face as Moroi endorphins flooded into her bloodstream. I shivered, taken back to when I too had experienced that same kind of euphoria. You read "Frostbite Chapter 14" in category "Essay examples" In my alcohol-hazed mind, the whole thing suddenly seemed startlingly erotic. In fact, I almost felt intrusive- like I was watching people have sex. When the Moroi finished and licked the last of the blood away, he brushed his lips against her cheek in a soft kiss. ââ¬Å"Want to volunteer?â⬠Light fingertips brushed my neck, and I jumped. I turned around and saw Adrianââ¬â¢s green eyes and knowing smirk. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t do that,â⬠I told him, knocking his hand away. ââ¬Å"Then what are you doing in here?â⬠he asked. I gestured around me. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m lost.â⬠He peered at me. ââ¬Å"Are you drunk?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Of course notâ⬠¦but â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The nausea had settled a little, but I still didnââ¬â¢t feel right. ââ¬Å"I think I should sit down.â⬠He took my arm. ââ¬Å"Well, donââ¬â¢t do it in here. Someone might get the wrong idea. Letââ¬â¢s go somewhere quiet.â⬠He steered me off into a different room, and I looked around with interest. It was a massage area. Several Moroi lay back on tables and were getting back and foot massages from hotel staff. The oil they used smelled like rosemary and lavender. Under any other circumstances, a massage would have sounded great, but lying on my stomach seemed like the worst idea just now. I sat down on the carpeted floor, leaning back against the wall. Adrian walked away and returned with a glass of water. Sitting down as well, he handed it to me. ââ¬Å"Drink this. Itââ¬â¢ll help.â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you, Iââ¬â¢m not drunk,â⬠I mumbled. But I downed the water anyway. ââ¬Å"Uh-huh.â⬠He smiled at me. ââ¬Å"You did nice work with that fight. Who was the other guy that helped you?â⬠ââ¬Å"My boyfriend,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Sort of.â⬠ââ¬Å"Mia was right. You do have a lot of guys in your life.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not like that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠He was still smiling. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s Vasilisa? I figured sheââ¬â¢d be attached to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s with her boyfriend.â⬠I studied him. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s with the tone? Jealous? You want him for yourself?â⬠ââ¬Å"God, no. I just donââ¬â¢t like him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Does he treat her badly?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I admitted. ââ¬Å"He adores her. Heââ¬â¢s just kind of a jerk.â⬠Adrian was clearly enjoying this. ââ¬Å"Ah, you are jealous. Does she spend more time with him than you?â⬠I ignored that. ââ¬Å"Why do you keep asking about her? Are you interested in her?â⬠He laughed. ââ¬Å"Rest easy, Iââ¬â¢m not interested in her in the same way I am you.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you are interested.â⬠ââ¬Å"I just want to talk to her.â⬠He left to fetch me more water. ââ¬Å"Feeling better?â⬠he asked, handing the glass to me. It was crystal and intricately carved. It seemed too fancy for plain water. ââ¬Å"Yeah â⬠¦ I didnââ¬â¢t think those drinks were that strong.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the beauty of them,â⬠he chuckled. ââ¬Å"And speaking of beauty â⬠¦ thatââ¬â¢s a great color on you.â⬠I shifted. I might not have been showing as much skin as those other girls, but I was showing more than I really wanted to with Adrian. Or was I? There was something weird about him. His arrogant manner annoyed meâ⬠¦but I still liked being around him. Maybe the smartass in me recognized a kindred spirit. Somewhere in the back of my drunken mind, a light clicked on. But I couldnââ¬â¢t quite get to it. I drank more water. ââ¬Å"You havenââ¬â¢t had a cigarette in, like, ten minutes,â⬠I pointed out, wanting to change the subject. He made a face. ââ¬Å"No smoking in here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure youââ¬â¢ve made up for it in punch.â⬠His smile returned. ââ¬Å"Well, some of us can hold our liquor. You arenââ¬â¢t going to be sick, are you?â⬠I still felt tipsy but no longer nauseous. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good.â⬠I thought back to when Iââ¬â¢d dreamed about him. It had been just a dream, but it had stuck with me, particularly the talk about me being surrounded in darkness. I wanted to ask him about itâ⬠¦ even though I knew it was stupid. It had been my dream, not his. ââ¬Å"Adrianâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He turned his green eyes on me. ââ¬Å"Yes, darling?â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t bring myself to ask. ââ¬Å"Never mind.â⬠He started to retort, then tilted his head toward the door. ââ¬Å"Ah, here she comes.â⬠ââ¬Å"Who- ââ¬Å" Lissa stepped into the room, eyes scanning around. When she spotted us, I saw relief break over her. I couldnââ¬â¢t feel it, though. Intoxicants like alcohol numbed the bond. It was another reason I shouldnââ¬â¢t have taken such a stupid chance tonight. ââ¬Å"There you are,â⬠she said, kneeling beside me. Glancing at Adrian, she gave him a nod. ââ¬Å"Hey.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey yourself, cousin,â⬠he returned, using the family terms royals sometimes used around each other. ââ¬Å"You okay?â⬠Lissa asked me. ââ¬Å"When I saw how drunk you were, I thought you might have fallen in somewhere and drowned.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not- â⬠I gave up trying to deny it. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fine.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s usual expression had turned serious as he studied Lissa. It again reminded me of the dream. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢d you find her?â⬠Lissa gave him a puzzled look. ââ¬Å"I, um, checked all the rooms.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠He looked disappointed. ââ¬Å"I thought you might have used your bond.â⬠Both she and I stared. ââ¬Å"How do you know about that?â⬠I demanded. Only a few people at school knew about it. Adrian had spoken about it as casually as he might have my hair color. ââ¬Å"Hey, I canââ¬â¢t reveal all my secrets, can I?â⬠he asked mysteriously. ââ¬Å"And besides, thereââ¬â¢s a certain way you two act around each other â⬠¦ itââ¬â¢s hard to explain. Itââ¬â¢s pretty coolâ⬠¦ all the old myths are true.â⬠Lissa regarded him warily. ââ¬Å"The bond only works one way. Rose can sense what Iââ¬â¢m feeling and thinking, but I canââ¬â¢t do it back to her.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ah.â⬠We sat in silence a few moments, and I drank more water. Adrian spoke again. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢d you specialize in anyway, cousin?â⬠She looked embarrassed. We both knew it was important to keep her spirit powers secret from others who might abuse her healing, but her cover story of not having specialized always bothered her. ââ¬Å"I havenââ¬â¢t,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Do they think youââ¬â¢re going to? Late bloomer?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re probably higher in the other elements, though, right? Just not strong enough to really master any?â⬠He reached out to pat her shoulder in an exaggerated show of comfort. ââ¬Å"Yeah, howââ¬â¢d you- ââ¬Å" The instant his fingers touched her, she gasped. It was as though a bolt of lightning had struck her. The strangest look crossed her face. Even drunk, I felt the flood of joy that came pouring through the bond. She stared at Adrian in wonder. His eyes were locked onto hers too. I didnââ¬â¢t understand why they were looking at each other like that, but it bothered me. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Stop that. I told you, she has a boyfriend.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠he said, still watching her. A small smile turned his lips. ââ¬Å"We need to have a chat someday, cousin.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠she agreed. ââ¬Å"Hey.â⬠I was more confused than ever. ââ¬Å"You have a boyfriend. And there he is.â⬠She blinked back to reality. All three of us turned toward the doorway. Christian and the others stood there. I suddenly had a flashback to when theyââ¬â¢d found me with Adrianââ¬â¢s arm around me. This wasnââ¬â¢t much better. Lissa and I were sitting on either side of him, very close. She sprang up, looking mildly guilty. Christian was regarding her curiously. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re getting ready to leave,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠she told him. She looked down at me. ââ¬Å"Ready?â⬠I nodded and started to clamber to my feet. Adrian caught my arm as I did and helped me up. He smiled at Lissa. ââ¬Å"Nice talking to you.â⬠To me, he murmured very quietly, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry. I told you, Iââ¬â¢m not interested in her in that way. She doesnââ¬â¢t look as good in a bathing suit. Probably not as good out of one either.â⬠I pulled my arm away. ââ¬Å"Well, youââ¬â¢ll never find out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okay,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I have a good imagination.â⬠I joined the others, and we headed back toward the main part of the lodge. Mason gave me as strange a look as Christian had given Lissa and stayed away from me, walking toward the front with Eddie. To my surprise and discomfort, I found myself walking beside Mia. She looked miserable. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m really sorry about what happened,â⬠I said finally. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t have to act like you care, Rose.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no. I mean it. Itââ¬â¢s horribleâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢m so sorry.â⬠She wouldnââ¬â¢t look at me. ââ¬Å"Isâ⬠¦that is, are you going to see your dad soon?â⬠ââ¬Å"Whenever they have the memorial,â⬠she said stiffly. ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t know what else to say and gave up, instead turning my attention to the stairs as we climbed back up to the lodgeââ¬â¢s main level. Unexpectedly, Mia was the one who continued the conversation. ââ¬Å"I watched you break up that fight â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she said slowly. ââ¬Å"You mentioned offensive magic. Like you knew about it.â⬠Oh. Great. She was going to make a play at blackmailâ⬠¦or was she? At the moment, she seemed almost civil. ââ¬Å"I was just guessing,â⬠I said. No way was I going to bust Tasha and Christian. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t really know that much. Just stories Iââ¬â¢ve heard.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠Her face fell. ââ¬Å"What kind of stories?â⬠ââ¬Å"Um, wellâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I tried to think of something neither too vague nor too specific. ââ¬Å"Like I told those guysâ⬠¦the concentration thing is big. Because if youââ¬â¢re in a battle with Strigoi, all sorts of things can distract you. So youââ¬â¢ve got to keep control.â⬠That was actually a basic guardian rule, but it must have been new to Mia. Her eyes widened with eagerness. ââ¬Å"What else? What kind of spells do people use?â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. I donââ¬â¢t really even know how spells work, and like I said, these are justâ⬠¦stories Iââ¬â¢ve heard. My guess is you just find ways to use your element as a weapon. Like â⬠¦ fire users really have an advantage because fireââ¬â¢ll kill Strigoi, so itââ¬â¢s easy for them. And air users can suffocate people.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d actually experienced that last one vicariously through Lissa. It had been horrible. Miaââ¬â¢s eyes grew wider still. ââ¬Å"What about a water user?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"How could water hurt a Strigoi?â⬠I paused. ââ¬Å"I, uh, never heard any stories about water users. Sorry.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you have any ideas, though? Ways that, like, someone like me could learn to fight?â⬠Ah. So thatââ¬â¢s what this was about. It actually wasnââ¬â¢t all that crazy. I remembered how excited sheââ¬â¢d looked at the meeting when Tasha had talked about attacking Strigoi. Mia wanted to take revenge on the Strigoi for her motherââ¬â¢s death. No wonder she and Mason had been getting along so well. ââ¬Å"Mia,â⬠I said gently, catching hold of the door to let her pass. We were almost at the lobby now. ââ¬Å"I know how you must want to â⬠¦ do something. But I think youââ¬â¢re better off just sort of letting yourself, um, grieve.â⬠She reddened, and suddenly, I was seeing the normal and angry Mia. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t talk down to me,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Hey, Iââ¬â¢m not. Iââ¬â¢m serious. Iââ¬â¢m just saying you shouldnââ¬â¢t do anything rash while youââ¬â¢re still upset. Besides â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I bit off my words. She narrowed her eyes. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠Screw it. She needed to know. ââ¬Å"Well, I donââ¬â¢t really know what good a water user would be against a Strigoi. Itââ¬â¢s probably the least useful element to use on one of them.â⬠Outrage filled her features. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a real bitch, you know that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m just telling you the truth.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, let me tell you the truth. Youââ¬â¢re a total idiot when it comes to guys.â⬠I thought about Dimitri. She wasnââ¬â¢t entirely off base. ââ¬Å"Masonââ¬â¢s great,â⬠she continued. ââ¬Å"One of the nicest guys I know- and you donââ¬â¢t even notice! Heââ¬â¢d do anything for you, and you were off throwing yourself at Adrian Ivashkov.â⬠Her words surprised me. Could Mia have a crush on Mason? And while I certainly hadnââ¬â¢t been throwing myself at Adrian, I could see how it might have looked that way. And even if it werenââ¬â¢t true, that wouldnââ¬â¢t have stopped Mason from feeling hurt and betrayed. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re right,â⬠I said. Mia stared at me, so astonished Iââ¬â¢d agreed with her that she didnââ¬â¢t say anything else for the rest of the walk. We reached the part of the lodge that split off into different wings for guys and girls. I grabbed a hold of Masonââ¬â¢s arm as the others walked off. ââ¬Å"Hang on,â⬠I told him. I badly needed to reassure him about Adrian, but a tiny part of me wondered if I was doing it because I actually wanted Mason or because I just liked the idea of him wanting me and selfishly didnââ¬â¢t want to lose that. He stopped and looked at me. His face was wary. ââ¬Å"I wanted to tell you Iââ¬â¢m sorry. I shouldnââ¬â¢t have yelled at you after the fight- I know you were just trying to help. And with Adrianâ⬠¦nothing happened. I mean it.â⬠ââ¬Å"It didnââ¬â¢t look that way,â⬠Mason said. But the anger on his face had faded. ââ¬Å"I know, but believe me, itââ¬â¢s all him. Heââ¬â¢s got some kind of stupid crush on me.â⬠My tone must have been convincing because Mason smiled. ââ¬Å"Well. Hard not to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not interested in him,â⬠I continued. ââ¬Å"Or anyone else.â⬠It was a small lie, but I didnââ¬â¢t think it mattered just then. I was going to be over Dimitri soon, and Mia had been right about Mason. He was wonderful and sweet and cute. I would be an idiot not to pursue this â⬠¦ right? My hand was still on his arm, and I pulled him toward me. He didnââ¬â¢t need much more of a signal. He leaned down and kissed me, and in the process, I found myself pressed up against the wall- very much like with Dimitri in the practice room. Of course, it felt nothing like how it had with Dimitri, but it was still nice in its way. I put my arms around Mason and started to pull him closer. ââ¬Å"We could go â⬠¦ somewhere,â⬠I said. He pushed back and laughed. ââ¬Å"Not when youââ¬â¢re drunk.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m notâ⬠¦ thatâ⬠¦ drunk anymore,â⬠I said, trying to pull him back. Giving me a small kiss on the lips, he stepped back. ââ¬Å"Drunk enough. Look, this isnââ¬â¢t easy, believe me. But if you still want me tomorrow- when youââ¬â¢re sober- then weââ¬â¢ll talk.â⬠He leaned down and kissed me again. I tried to wrap my arms around him, but he broke away once more. ââ¬Å"Easy there, girl,â⬠he teased, backing toward his hallway. I glared at him, but he only laughed and turned around. As he walked away, my glare faded, and I headed back to my room with a smile on my face. How to cite Frostbite Chapter 14, Essay examples
Political Socialization free essay sample
Have you ever thought about why you have the political beliefs and values you do? Where did they come from? Are they simply your own ideas and experiences or have you been influenced by others in your thinking? This process by which individuals acquire their political beliefs and attitudes is called political socialization. In another words, Political socialization is a concept where the study of the developmental processes by which children and adolescents acquire political cognition, attitudes and behaviors. What people think and how they come to think it is of critical importance to the stability of the government. The beliefs and values of the people are the basis for a societys political culture and that culture defines the parameters of political life and governments? action. There are many agents that influence in one degree or another individuals political socialization. Factors such as: family, friends, teachers, media, religion, race, gender, age and geography all influence us in one way or another during our childhood years. By now you should know that most political opinions are formed during childhood and many political ideas are passed down from parents to their children through them expressing their beliefs. When I was growing up I formed many opinions and attitudes due to the fact my parents were feeling that way. Growing up during in early/mid 1990? s in Bosnia wasn? t easy. With a country in a full scale war people were looking for help. A country that just few years earlier hosted and showed the world a great Winter Olympic Games was in need of help, but no one answered. People started forming their own opinions and theories about the world that has turned their back on them, including my parents. There was very limited access of what was happening in the world available to the people. I can clearly remember trying to figure out what is happening on my own and listening to my parents and trying to form something out of it. I lived in Sarajevo, where it was impossible to get in or out the city for the first year or so. Even with the United Nations present in the city I always asked myself why don? t they end this? To this day, questions always reappear in my mind about the international polices and innerving in a war when so many people are dying. How many lives does it take before the world powers and the most honored world governments sit down and a peace treaty is signed? For me this experience made me establish my own opinions about government and political views. With my parents constantly debating about who started the war, why aren? t the Americans coming, where is the humanitarian aid and many other questions concerning government policies, made me favor what my parents were saying and agree with them. By 1995, most of the fighting has stopped and siege was over and school back in session. Now, more views were formed to enforce what I been hearing at home, but as well some made me look at things in a different as well. I started to develop my own thoughts that have been flooded with so much hate during my childhood. Schools played a really influential agent, after the family, due to the extended exposure to a variety of political beliefs. My friends and teachers, both respected sources of information in one way or another made me look at the world in a different way. I always to this date keep asking myself some of the same questions my parents debated about. I just can? t let it go. Why did so many people get shot, murdered, raped and killed in Srebrenica? In a U. N safe zone, but it still happened. School thought us the history and not to forget. With school back in session, so was the television, newspaper and other sources of mass media. Media took over and attempted to reshape what we all have experienced in the previews five years for the benefit of their own profit. Foreign investors came in and took advantage of others need at a very cheap cost. I remember, first commercial on the national television was about the new mall what was to replace the shelled down Olympic village and the new president was going to be at ceremony. New lottery game was advertised everywhere with faces of political party members. It like nothing has happening the year before. Another factors started to surface with me. Did a religion cause this terrible war? With so much talk about genocide and ethnic cleansing, religion was being though in school. At that time it was unbelievably hard to form your own opinions with so much information being fed to you by the mass media and government policies. Today, I look back to everything that has happened and how did I come to the thoughts and opinions I have about politics. Family was a primary influence in the development of my political orientation, mainly due to constant relationship between my parents and I. Schools became a source to enforce what I been hearing at home. Then Mass Media took over and tried to paint a picture of functions as a political information-giver to adolescents and young children. With placing political figures in everyday life and association with political parties, I can only imagine what their goal was. The earliest socialization I believed is the deepest one because i favored with what parents have been going along with. Their political party favor and mine today however now that I am old enough and been influenced by a different culture I am beginning to rethink many views on our world today.

The students in this class ranged from second grade up to fifth grade and all are fairly fluent in English, but come from homes that use Spanish as the primary language. The day began with a rehearsal of a play this class will be performing for the first graders. This play calls for the children to read, understand, and memorize the parts of such characters as the narrator, a donkey, cat, rooster, robbers, police, dog, and pigs. By doing this they have been exposed to many animals and have done an enormous amount of authentic learning just through their own personal experiences. Each of the twelve children was given the script and they went through the play working on the memorization of the lines and pronunciation of the words. I was impressed with the number of students who had their entire part memorized and who could easily read and recite the English words in perfect sentences. After going through the play three times the class moved onto a singing activity that they did together. This included reading the words to the songs Loud Blows the Wind, My True Blue Buddy, and Lots and Lots of Stars via a large book in front of the class. Mrs. Campbell then called on a few to read the song individually as another used the pointer to follow along. Once confident with the words and meaning of the song they would put it to music and the whole class would sing the song together at the top of their lungs. Through the singing of these songs the students were using a variety of everyday words along with different descriptive words, and most animals/foods imaginable. They were gaining experience in reading, widening their vocabulary, practicing their sounds and having a great time all in one exercise. The student to student interaction was amazing and the teacher did a great job of facilitating the class as they discovered and used different English words in their speaking. It was great to be able to witness such a productive and fun activity. Everybody was singing, laughing, and learning, after all thats what schools about. Upon entering the classroom there were a couple of things that immediately caught my attention. First, I was expecting a class of mixed ethnic groups with maybe a couple languages being used, the majority being Hispanic; however, the class was in fact all Hispanic except for the teacher who was Asian. It was interesting to see how closely tied this class was. It seemed, as though the children were all best friends with the teacher their fearless leader that they looked up to. This provided a very unthreading environment where even the shyest could feel comfortable and enjoy the learning and laughing that was going on. An environment of this type is important in helping to build self esteem and the confidence that will lead to a faster learning of the language. Second, was Mrs. Campbell effective use of positive reinforcement as well as other techniques to encourage and reward the class. Her students had plenty of opportunity to produce language and she gives valuable feedback when necessary. Her teaching philosophy is clearly in line with the communicative language model of teaching and she agrees with the book in that language is created by the individual often through trial and error, and that fluency and acceptable language is the primary goal. Her classroom places an emphasis on learning to communicate through interaction in the target language and she adds to the fun by using songs and plays. It was nice to see a textbook example of a perfect classroom. .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .postImageUrl , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:hover , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:visited , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:active { border:0!important; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:active , .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3 .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue09aba6169ecc4402e5927375a00afa3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Long Swings in the Exchange Rate and the Excess Re Essay It is hard to gain a full sense of everything that Mrs. Campbell does in just a few short hours however, from what I could tell she is a very competent teacher who knows how to bring a new language into effect while at the same time providing a good learning environment for her students. American Revolution Essay Exam 2 Essays - American Revolution
American Revolution Essay Exam 2 Essays - American Revolution American Revolution Essay Exam 2 American Revolution "I have a right to!". How many times have you said this or heard someone else say this? Where did this come from? Your rights started with the American Revolution (War for Independence). There are several cause for the revolution from the French and Indian War of 1754 to the First Continental Congress meeting of 1774. Remember though, where the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening had affected the way many Americans thought about government these events strengthened their new ways of thinking even more. "No taxation without representation", this famous line, I believe was one of the most important reasons for the war of independence. One of the problems that led to the separation was the fact that Americans were not represented in British Parliament. After the Seven Years War (French and Indian War), the British began taxing the colonists. Britain supported "virtual representation" (The concept of virtual representation was employed by Prime Minister George Grenville to explain why Parliament could legally tax the colonists even though the colonists could not elect any members of Parliament. The theory of virtual representation held that the members of Parliament did not only represent their specific geographical constituencies, but rather that they took into consideration the well being of all British subjects when deliberating on legislation. - sparknotes.com/history/american/prerevolution/terms.html) . Most of the colonies' leaders considered themselves Americans, not Englishmen or British citizens, and demanded to be represented in parliament. Essentially it meant, "No taxation by Parliament. No representation in Parliament. Let us run our own affairs." The Stamp Act Congress in 1765 argued this form of representation. The Stamp Act of 1765 required every colonists to pay taxes on all printed documents. Such as, licenses, commercial contracts, newspapers, and playing cards. This was basically an attempt by the British to collect money without having any consent of the colonial assemblies. American leaders and colonists, as we as I mentioned above did like the idea of this, and believed it was taxation without representation. Soon mobs began rising up in many colonies to go against the Stamp Act. The Sons of Liberty, the largest mob in Boston, burned the stamps, began terrorizing the stamp agents, and attacked Thomas Hutchinson ( he supported the stamp act when it became law). With the boycotting expanding, eventually repealed the Stamp Act in 1766. In June of 1767 the Townshend Revenue Acts were passed. This put a tax on American imports-paper, paint ,tea, and glass. Just like with the Stamp Act, again the Americans refused to pay this tax. When boycotting began and governors began closing the assemblies other colonies were drug into the struggle. Originally this had really only affected Massachusetts, but now that the assemblies were being closed it started affecting all surrounding colonies. This helped to bring about the unity between very different colonies. Now the other colonies were more willing to help boycott and revolt against the British. British soldiers that King George had kept in the colonies were patrolling like usual. The Americans at this point thought that the soldiers were there to take away their liberties and rights. So in 1770 the colonists began tormenting them by cursing or spitting on them as they walked by. Soon (a mob of dockworkers) "liberty boys" starting throwing rocks/snowballs at the soldiers and adults, finding this amusing, stood around insulting the soldiers. When the crowd grew larger the soldiers panicked. They fired into crowd. Five Americans were killed during this event and it soon became known as the Boston Massacre to the Americans. Many stories were told about what had happened, but the truth was lost in the propaganda that later came out afterwards. With the Boston Massacre being interpreted as the soldiers executing the five Americans, the colonists became infuriated and wanted to rebel. Not long after, the soldiers were removed and taken to Boston Harbor island. (Paul Revere, The Bloody Massacre in King-Street, March 5, 1770. Boston, 1770. (Gilder Lehrman Collection) The Boston Tea Party was a result of the Tea Act of 1773. The colonists once again considered this "taxation without representation". A group of angered men decided to dress themselves as Indians and dump the tea off of the ships and

Social-Emotional Development In A Child Of 4Yrs Ol Essays - Learning
Social-Emotional Development In A Child Of 4Yrs Ol Essays - Learning Social-Emotional Development In A Child Of 4Yrs Old Chapter 2- Social - Emotional Development The potential possibilities of any child are the most intriguing and stimulating in all creation. Ray L. Wilbur The typical four year old has a very good sense of humor. They love being silly and love to tell jokes that make others laugh. While observing Michael and the class having breakfast in the cafeteria, Michael and two of his friends were telling jokes. Boy 1: Knock! Knock! Michael: Whos there? Boy 1: Knock! Knock! Boy 2: He said whos there? Boy 1: Pizza. Michael: Pizza? Boy 1: Yeah I said pizza. Michael: Pizza who? Boy 1: Hmmm (pauses for a moment) I forgot. Boy 1, Boy 2, and Michael begin to laugh hysterically at one another. They are laughing so hard that other children around them begin to laugh as well. There are many different meanings for the term social development, but the one thing that is for sure is that it is a long and ongoing process This process begins in early childhood with self discovery and results in the ability to interact with others. During the social - emotional development of a four year old child, they are still continuing to learn about themselves. Their sense of identity includes knowledge that they are a boy or girl (gender) and a member of a particular family, racial, religious or ethnic group (Mitchell and David, 1992). However, their sense of self is unstable. Preschoolers are aware of how people feel about them. They want to please adults in their lives and look for approval and praise. Preschoolers are also developing new social skills. Friendships often have a momentary quality, although some friendships may be quite stable, especially if children have known each other for a long time (Pica, 1997). Play and social development go hand and hand. Play offers many opportunities to be with other children and to share, take turns, disagree, and compromise (Mitchell and Davis, 1992). Children enjoy each others company. While at play, they are increasing their self awareness, and are becoming more involved in cooperative play. Emotionally, children develop greater self awareness, characteristics, and actions. They are also able to predict the emotions of others. According to Huffnung (1997) children will develop empathy or the ability to appreciate the feeling of others and understand their point of view. If one child begins an activity, it is likely that his friends will want to follow along. Michael was sitting at the table in the cafeteria eating breakfast and he kept dropping his napkin on the floor because he knew that the college student would pick it up for him. Two other boys that were sitting with him saw what was going on and they started to drop their napkin on the floor also. This continued for a few moments until the college student yelled at the boys. She then began to ignore their behavior and eventually they stopped. Michael likes to play in a group with his friends. Michael, another boy and a college student were playing in the block area. They had a handful of different bugs and the college student suggested that they build a house for the bugs to live in. Michael and the boy went to get long blocks to start building the house. Michael: We need long blocks to build the house. Boy: Ok I will get them. Michael: Hey look! This can be a sliding door. Boy: We need to take the bugs out. Michael: Go over there and get those long ones so we can put them on top. A girl runs over from the snack table and sits down next to Michael. She grabs a bug and pretends to make it hop from one level to the next. Michael: Hey! What are you doing? Stop that were not done here! Boy: Yeah you cant do that. We need to build a house for the bugs to live in. Girl: Can I build with you? Michael: No! Girls cant build houses for bugs. No! College Student: Just because she is a girl Michael doesnt mean she cant play with you and help you make a house. Girl: Well hes not my friend anymore. Michael and his friend continue to build the house and do not pay attention to what the college student had said. The girl however did not get upset and she started building a house in a different area. Where she was building her house, Michael had an idea to build a road for the bugs to hop across. The road that they built connected the two houses together so that everyone could play. When

Workplace Crime and Honest Dealing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Workplace Crime and Honest Dealing - Essay Example Staff dishonesty is a crime committed against companies and does not solely consist of theft. Matthew Liew asserts that "crime encompasses exposures to loss from the dishonest acts of people within or outside the company." This may involve money or property of the company. Staff dishonesty could also include other types of misbehaviors such as "rule-breaking, destructive practices, non-cooperative practices, disruptive practices and misuse of facilities" (Challinger 2). One of the most common forms of staff dishonesty is theft. "Employee theft from a retail store is a term that is used when an employee steals merchandise, food, cash, or supplies while on the job" (McGoey). Theft can also be in the form of misusing employee discounts, offering discounted prices to friends, and cheating by reporting incorrect number of hours of work (Adjudicative Desk Reference). It can be assumed that this type of crime can be more damaging to retail companies because the involved persons are part of the organization, are usually trusted, and should be well-informed about the crime prevention measures that the company is adopting (McGoey). Matthew Liew adds that staff dishonesty can be detrimental to the company, especially since it may take a long time before it can be detected. Although employee theft is... Several authors believe that around 50% to 60% of employees in retail companies are guilty of dishonest conduct (Adjudicative Desk Reference). Studies conducted also indicate that staff dishonesty can equate to thousands of dollars in losses. Dennis Challinger notes that employee theft or pilferage, as opposed to other workplace crimes, is easy to measure, translating to around 1.8% of the gross national product in Britain and $40 billion a year in the United States, causing the failure of around 20% of companies in the U.S. (2). According to Kevin Philip, "staff dishonesty could account for up to 60 per cent of business losses" (9). In a separate survey by the University of Florida in 2002, employee theft accounted for disappearance of around 48% of store inventories, translating to $1.5 billion per year. The same survey found that compared to shoplifting, employee theft equated to an average loss of $1,341.02 for each case of theft, while for every shoplifting incident, average dol lar loss was only $207 (McGoey). What is obvious in several studies conducted on the prevalence of workplace dishonesty is that some of those who committed such offense are managers or those in authority. It was reported that in Britain, 8% of managers have been involved in workplace crime (Challinger 3). In a study conducted by Kevin Philip, it was found that dishonest employees in supermarkets include managers, head cashiers, front-end supervisors, cahiers, floor staff and store men. In a study that involved 1,408 retail employees in the Minneapolis area, 60% of those surveyed admitted to having committed an illegal activity, with 57% having been involved in misusing employee discount, while 12% admitted having taken a merchandise without paying for it (Adjudicative

Human Resources Management Master Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words
Human Resources Management Master - Essay Example HRM itself is the new avatar of 'Personnel Management'. Personnel management was largely concerned with the technical aspects of hiring, evaluating, training, and compensating employees. HRM on the other hand leaves scope for career building of the employee, development of a professional relationship and the satisfaction aspect. as per the latest trend, the 'individual' acquires a central place in the HR policies being devised by the management. HRM mainly intends to bring optimum out of the individual so that the company gets maximum output and in turn the individual too gets his due share of profit. This further inspires the individual as well as the team to perform par excellence. Human Resource Management is a very crucial and an integral part of any organization. The very fact that now people are being considered as resource instead of liability marks the importance of human beings constituting this resource. Human Resource environment as such is affected mainly by the following five factors; ii. i. Economic: The economic environment of host country, inflation rates, growth factors and the levels of unemployment affect the HR policies. ii. Demographic: The demographic composition of the workforce like the communities involved, the caste consideration (this becomes a reasonable factor in case of some of the developing economies), the male-female composition, the population density of the country/ region also helps in devising effective HR strategies. iii. Socio-cultural: Religion and culture never tell a person to 'not to work', yet people of some socio-cultural background are found to be less workaholic than others. The effect of family systems like 'Joint family system' or 'Nuclear family system' become crucial factors in forming the habits of individuals and thus formulating of HR policies. Employees sometimes prefer flexibility in their work schedule depending upon the local festive season, local climatic conditions etc. iv. Technological: Rapid technological advancements have reduced the dependence on muscle power to a certain extent. Modernization and automation lead to increased accuracy and less redundancy in the output while increasing the comfort level of the workforce. v. Politico Legal: Prevailing political situation in the country, the party in power, the ideology of government functionaries affect the business environment. Whether it's a democracy, autocracy, monarchy, one party system, or a multi-party system gives enough room for strategy planners to devise HR policies accordingly. The law of the land has always to be kept in mind while doing the recruitments or managing the human resources. For example in some countries, formation of 'workers union' is not allowed while in some others it's mandatory. All these efforts are to be kept in mind while devising strategies/ policies for HRM, with the prime objective of HRM being 'developing congruence between individual goals and organizational objectives while striving for realizing higher standards of performance, satisfaction and quality of working life'. The HR manager is therefore directly responsible towards the retention and upkeep of 'human assets' in an
